What the Dickens!

Today is the bicentenary of the birth of the genius writer Charles Dickens, so often in our endeavours to create vintage images we conjure Dickensian references. Whilst reflecting on his talents to scribe such incredible characters ,scenes and the artistry of weaving intricate plots I came across a quote that may appeal to crafters. Although it is not the original intention of the quote I felt a connection with the words as a creator ( possibly an excuse for my passion too! Not that I ever needed one).

"The whole difference between construction and creation is exactly this: that a thing constructed can only be loved after it is constructed; but a thing created is loved before it exists." Charles Dickens , The Pickwick Papers.

So in honour of this inspirational man I thought it would be appropriate to share my original sketches that I made for the Jasper range of stamps. In my subconscious I imaged the larger than life characters travelling through time like an eccentric Dickensian Time lord.
Sketched with  pencil then worked with fineliner pen.
Detail of stamped image.

Keep warm this evening it looks like it's going to be a very chilly one, at least we have the luxury of central heating unlike the citizens of  Dickensian England!
